Prison Island

Prison Island, Zanzibar, also known as Changuu Island, is a 5.6-kilometer-long island whose major attraction is a large tortoise colony. The island has become a must-see Tanzanian treasure. Despite its turbulent past, Prison Island was originally a slave detention facility and, at one point, a quarantine facility.

On a leisurely half-day tour from Stone Town, you may visit this gorgeous island, which is great for a walk. The view of Stone Town from the island is spectacular, particularly at night. We will take you on a short guided tour of the island. Following the guided trip, you can swim in the crystal clear water or explore the magnificent coral reefs by

The colony of Giant Tortoises is without a doubt the main draw!

More About

Former British Prime Minister of Zanzibar purchased the island in 1893 and built a jail complex on it. A sanctuary for Aldabra giant tortoises, which were originally a gift from the Seychelles, is located on one side of Prison Island.
The building is now a ruin, but it serves as a lovely guesthouse for travelers, where you can unwind and enjoy spectacular views after seeing the giant tortoise reserve, where you may observe, pet, and even feed these majestic, ancient, gentle creatures. They discovered Prison Island to be an excellent breeding ground and bred freely. Many tortoises await you today, and the earliest settlers are still among them!

There is also a baby tortoise nursery where you may watch tortoises of various ages. A fantastic experience for everyone, especially children!
